I Am A Man: Civil Rights Photographs in the American South
Apr 7, 2023 10:00 am - Apr 7, 2023 4:00 pm
The I Am A Man photo exhibit documents the courage and determination of protesters in the civil rights movement throughout the 1960s, capturing the emotion, danger and volatility of confrontations in stark detail.
The photos were taken by amateurs, local photojournalists, and internationally known photographers alike, all bearing witness to the violence and brutality that protesters faced.
The exhibit title comes from a slogan of the sanitation workers’ strike that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was scheduled to lead the day after he was assassinated on April 4, 1968. The exhibit is a powerful reminder of the courageous stands people took to fight for civil rights and an end to Jim Crow-era racial segregation and discrimination.
This exhibit is a Program of Exhibits USA, a national division of the Mid-America Arts Alliance and The National Endowment for the Arts.
