October 25th – Lafayette Visits Portsmouth

Lafayette Day at City Park – 9 am
Fort Nelson Chapter of the Portsmouth DAR rededication of Centennial Pyramid Monument with proclamation.

Lafayette arrives at North Street Landing – 2 pm
Welcomed by Portsmouth dignitaries, citizens, school children, and other historical reenactors. Lafayette and notables lead school children to Lafayette Park (on Crawford Street) for a ceremony. Lafayette and notables board carriage and proceed down North Street to Emanuel AME.

Lafayette visits historic Emanuel AME – 3 pm
Greeted by Nathan Richardson interpreting Fredrick Douglas. Welcomed by pastor Sylvester and Mrs.“Frankie” Colvin. This 20-minute program includes a brief church history by Pastor Colvin, music and original poem written by Tonya Sinclair Swindell, and brief address by Lafayette.

Parade to Triumphal Arch – 3:30 pm
Lafayette and notables board carriage and proceed to Triumphal Arch. Carriage will stop at Crawford and High (200 High Street) to admire Lafayette historic stone marker. This marker was dedicated in 1890 and has recently been restored by generous funding from TowneBank, Portsmouth Historical Association, and Fort Nelson Chapter of the Portsmouth DAR. Carriage to then proceed to Triumphal Arch for ceremony.

Progressive Dinner with Lafayette (7 pm-9 pm)
A Progressive Dinner will take place at three historic homes on North Street. Hors d’oeuvres and drinks at the Bain House, dinner at the Grice House with dessert in the Hill House Gardens. Mark Schneider, who portrays Lafayette throughout the United States, will attend. Tickets are$100 per person. Purchase by visiting the Facebook page, History Alive.
