Did you know the first African American spy, double agent James Armistead Lafayette operated here in Portsmouth? Or that William “Billy” Flora, a free black and Hero of the Battle of Great Bridge, was a highly-respected citizen and business owner here? Or that Portsmouth was an important stop of the Underground Railroad?

Here these and other stories, as well as songs and more recent history, as you stroll the streets of Olde Towne with figures from Portsmouth’s rich and colorful past. African American History Walks leave from the Portsmouth Visitor Center.

Tickets are $10 at the Portsmouth Visitor Center, 6 Crawford Parkway (at the North Ferry Landing). For information, call 757-393-5111. Limited to 20 people, each walk.
